Integrated Care Systems
Partnering to improve outcomes in health & healthcare
What are integrated care systems?
On 1 July 2022, new Integrated Care Systems were established in law across England and Wales. These ICS’ have 4 objectives:
- Improve outcomes in population health and healthcare
- Tackle inequalities in outcomes, experience, and access
- Enhance productivity and value for money
- Help the NHS support broader social and economic development
The ICS in Kent and Medway comprises an Integrated Care Board (ICB) and an Integrated Care Partnership (ICP). There are 4 local Health Care Partnerships covering geographic areas of Kent and Medway, which are sub-committees of the ICB.
The VCSE sector is a key partner in the new Kent and Medway Integrated Care System. The sector has representatives on the ICB, the ICP and at each of the HCPs, as shown by the diagram. In addition, VCSE organisations are involved in several sub-committees and specific provider collaboratives. The ICB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the VCSE sector.

Local Alliances
The VCSE sector has also established local alliances in each of the 4 HCP areas. These provide a forum for networking and collaboration within the sector, and with key partners like local and county councils, and NHS organisations. Together, we are working to help reduce health inequalities and deliver programmes which promote health and wellbeing in our communities.
